Erected with the remains of fencing used to keep prisoners of Robben Island locked in tightly, Chris Swift’s 10 story tetrahedron star is bound to captivate and motivate sustainability as opposed to stagnation. Project X is the 1st of many official World Design Capital 2014 projects to begin their project by including the power of the crowd via crowdfunding with Thundafund.
Thundafund is also proud to announce that alongside our collaboration and partnership with World Design Capital 2014, we have also been recognised as a project – #WDC301.
Cape Town is hosting the World Design Capital next year and you can be part of one of the ultimate projects: an installation of shape and light on Signal Hill.
So… What is ‘World Design Capital‘?
It’s a project aimed at imprinting the message that design does effect change. By hosting it, Cape Town is honoured as an important part of the design world, a hub of creativity and community enriching ventures (which, if you know Cape Town, you’ll know to be spot-on).
The fourth country to get our hands and hearts into it, the Cape Town event will focus in on tying up loose ends left over from past struggles while paving the way for a sustainable future.
Cape Town Design, the ‘implementation company of World Design Capital 2014’ will ensure that all runs smoothly.
The theme? ‘Live design, transform life’ – that’s where Project X aims and scores without so much as a millimetre off the mark.

The installation, the star, will be lit up with energy efficient light bulbs that, after the exhibition, will be dispensed to houses in Khayelitsha. These bulbs last up to 25 years and use up 80% less energy than standard bulbs. If that’s not sustainable, I don’t know what is.
There’s something behind this project, a feeling, a mind-set that makes one want to be a part of it. It makes me want to volunteer my time, to touch the fencing, to change a bulb (not that they need changing). Perhaps it is because it is art implemented with its original purpose: to voice the times as they stand and give voice to the people who find themselves the tides of life as it really is and to inspire thought of how it can be.
Tackling the task with the power of the crowd, Project X leads by example. You’d be wise to follow suit.
Light it up and pass it on: this is an artist well known for pushing things to the next level by taking a step back; this time he is going all out… be part of the change, see the sky light up with hope as we step out of yesterday and into tomorrow – over here: www.thundafund.com/projectx
